John has extremely broad experience in all areas of land development, from small two-lot subdivisions to large commercial developments. He began his career as a survey technician in 1973, completing his NZCLS in 1977. After finishing a Bachelor of Surveying degree, John joined Graham Cato & Associates in 1981. Qualifying for registration in 1983, John was also awarded the Maurice Crompton Smith Memorial prize for submitting the best set of registration projects for the Certificate of Competency.

In 1984 John moved to Bahrain to take up the position of Regional Surveyor, which he held for seven years. In 1991 he returned to New Zealand and rejoined Cato Consultants, becoming a Director in 1994..
